Planting Your Pond

One of the reasons that many people install a backyard pond is to grow water plants. Even if this isn't the primary purpose for your water garden, there are still good reasons to add plants to your pond. If you want to have fish in your pond, plants help to filter the water, and keep the water oxygenated. They also provide food for the fish. If the purpose of your pond is simply to enjoy the sights or sounds of water in your backyard, then pond plants help to enhance the appearance of your water garden.

There are several different types of plants that you can add to your pond, and they all serve different purposes.

Bog plants are usually planted in moist soil around the edges of your pond. They help to disguise the edge of the pond, and to help the pond merge with the rest of the landscape. Marginal plants are similar to bog plants, except that they are grown in pots submerged in shallow water around the edges of the pond. They too, help to blend the pond into the rest of the yard.

Floating plants, such as water hyacinth, and water lettuce, float on the surface of the pond with their roots dangling freely in the water. These plants provide shade to the pond, which helps to keep algae from growing. Other plants, such as water lilies are planted in submerged pots. The roots grow in the soil in these pots, and the flowers and leaves float above, on the surface of the water. In addition to providing shade for the pond, water lilies also add a bright touch of color to your pond.

Underwater plants are completely submerged in the water. They help to filter the water, and to keep it oxygenated. Underwater plants also provide a place for your fish to hide from predators, and a cool place to rest out of the sun.

No matter why you installed your backyard pond, plants are an important part of it. They help your fish to thrive, they help to make your pond look more natural, and they just make the pond look nicer. The proper selection of plants will help to increase your enjoyment of your pond or water garden.
